Are You Listening?
Listening is a foundational skill for effective tutoring. While teaching often focuses on delivering knowledge, active listening ensures you truly understand your student’s needs, questions, and concerns. By honing your listening skills, you can create a more responsive and supportive learning environment.
Active listening goes beyond simply hearing words. It involves paying attention to tone, body language, and context. For example, if a student hesitates or avoids eye contact, they may be struggling with a concept but feel unsure about asking for help. Acknowledge these signals and encourage them to express their concerns openly. Do you also hear what the student needs? Are you really listening to their speech and how they phrase words? Observing these subtle details can reveal areas where the student may require additional support.
To practice active listening, give your full attention during sessions. Avoid distractions like checking your phone or thinking about your next point while the student is speaking. Show engagement by nodding, maintaining eye contact, and offering verbal affirmations such as, “I see,” or “That’s a good question.”
Paraphrasing is another effective tool. Repeat what the student has said in your own words to confirm understanding. For instance, “So, you’re asking if this grammar rule applies to all tenses, right?” This technique clarifies points and shows the student you value their input.
Listening also involves asking open-ended questions to encourage deeper responses. Instead of, “Do you understand?” try, “Can you explain that in your own words?” This approach fosters dialogue and helps identify gaps in understanding.
