Fables or Parables: The Crow and the Hawk

Once, during a great drought, a crow and a hawk found a broken bowl under a tree. Inside the bowl was a small amount of water, but it was too deep to reach. The hawk feared lowering his head, thinking the crow might attack. The crow stayed away for the same reason. So, neither drank, though both were desperately thirsty.

One day, the crow had an idea. He picked up a pebble and flew to the bowl. “It’s the little things that make a big difference,” he said, dropping the pebble into the water. The hawk watched in silence. Each day, the crow returned with another pebble, saying the same words. Slowly, the water rose closer to the top of the bowl.

Finally, the water was within reach. The crow removed a pebble, letting the water roll down his beak. “There’s enough for both of us,” he said. The hawk, realizing what the crow had done, took his turn.

From then on, they both remembered: “It’s the little things that make a big difference.”
