WHAT’S WRONG WITH SAYING ELEMENOPEE?

Natives are famous for singing the ABC Song and speeding up the lyrics when we get to the letters, L - M - N - O - P. When speed up the letters take on a new sound. One that sounds like the word, Elemenopee (e-lem-n-o-pee).

The problem is when young children or second language learners first learn the song and right away start using the word, “elemenopee“ instead of saying the actual letters, L - M - N - O - P.

As a tutor, I have witnessed the effects that this has on new learners and ESL students. It can create pronunciation issues along with making it more difficult to learn and remember new vocabulary.

So, sing the song repeatedly and have fun with. Vocalize each letter’s name so that you can hear each individual letter.

Once you can sing or say the letters all individually, then you can speed up and replace, L - M - N - O - P with that crazy fun word, elemenopee!
